Volunteering is an activity where you give up some of your time to benefits other people, groups or the environment.
Anyone can get involved in volunteering. There's a massive range of opportunities available, so whether you fancy a challenge, are looking to try something new or you want to use it for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards volunteering section, when it comes to helping others there is a lot to gain and a lot to do.
This depends on what you choose. Most opportunities are on a weekly or monthly basis but since you are giving your time voluntarily the organisation will appreciate whatever contribution you can give. The key thing is to be honest and open about what you can commit to so that everybody understands the expectation.
Listen to some of the videos on this website and hear from your people first hand.
By volunteering you can also get certificates recognising this. Just ask the person in charge at the place you volunteer to go on to this website, and download the application form. Before you know it, you'll have recognition of all the hard work you've done

There are thousands of opportunities available so what you do depends on your interests, skills and experience, although often no experience is necessary. Volunteering provides the chance to work in groups or individually so there is something for everyone. It is also a great way to gain new skills and experiences. This depends on what you do so always ask the question when first enquiring about an opportunity so that you are clear about what's on offer.
It looks good on a C.V. and often employers look for evidence of other interests and skills. Volunteering also shows your initiative, commitment and ability to work as part of a team. On top of these, volunteering can enhance your confidence and self esteem so that when you attend interviews you are able to communicate effectively.
Again, ask this questions when you are first enquiring about an opportunity so that you are clear about any financial commitment. Many organisations are happy to reimburse travel and minimum expenses.
The best thing you can do is speak to a member of staff at your local Job Centre Plus or you can download a booklet.
